THE HISTORIC KIDD & COMPANY BUILDING

RENOVATION OF EXISTING HISTORIC BUILDING TO A VENUE RENTAL CENTER

EXISTING CONDITIONS

NEW PLAN

The main body of the brick building is painted over with a modest blueish-purple color to camouflage the imperfections. Doing so gives the building a fresh appearance as well as calling out the, likely unnoticed, brick soldier course detail with light gray paint. All of the windows which were bricked or boarded over have been uncovered and replaced. The canopies over the two entrances have been rebuilt to resemble what was lost in the past. The addition to the left of the building, which houses the elevator and emergency stairs, is clad with a wood board composition, calling to the building’s historic use as a company store for a local furniture factory. Lights were added to the underside of the soffit to give it more architectural interest at night.
By opening the windows and by removing the display enclosures, the interior receives a generous amount of natural light and more floor space. The wood decking is shown as being replaced. The mezzanine had to be replaced in order for it to be used by the public. It’s wider and is at a level that more appropriately aligns with the adjacent floor. The new mezzanine preserves the unique quality of the original structure by supporting itself with tension rods from the ceiling. An elevator, an enclosed fire exit stair, and handicap accessible bathrooms were added making all three levels occupiable to the public. A commercial grade kitchen was added on the first floor for the possibility of the space being used as a restaurant. The first level plan is clear of any dividers in case it needs to host a special event.
The second floor is home to an art gallery along the North wall of the mezzanine, a lounge on the West end of the building, and the town museum on the South end.
A separate, rentable venue space is the entire third floor. It’s complete with handicap accessible bathrooms, a stage, and plenty of natural light coming through the large existing windows.
